Canada CFR Program
Rebates for EV charging stations through Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations
Earning Rebates through Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations
Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations are designed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from transportation fuels by incentivizing clean energy. The Regulations require fuel suppliers to reduce their emissions or purchase CFR credits, which can be generated and sold by owners of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
By opting into the Regulations, EV charging station owners can earn credits for each metric ton of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2e) emissions avoided through the delivery of electricity to electricity-powered vehicles. Learn how you can take advantage.
Under the Clean Fuel Regulations, Canada-based EV charging station owners are eligible to generate CFR credits for electricity delivered as a transportation fuel. The following types of EV charging stations are eligible to earn credits in Canada:
- Electricity Supplied to Electric / Hydrogen Forklift Trucks GSE
- Electricity Supplied to Electric Transportation Refrigeration Units (eTRUs)
- Electricity Supplied to Electric Trucks - All Classes and Yard Tractors
- Electricity Supplied to Electric Buses and Shuttles
Does my charging infrastructure qualify to earn credits under the Regulations?
If you own an electric vehicle charger, you may be eligible. If you’re unsure whether your charging infrastructure qualifies, contact us today.
Am I required to opt into the Regulations?
What happens if I don’t opt in?
Am I still eligible if I only have one electric vehicle charging station?
The application process for the Regulations requires owners of EV charging stations to register with the Minister. With Smart Charging Technologies’ Smart Rebates™ program, this process is simplified. Smart Rebates™ ensures that you meet all the eligibility requirements through the streamlined opt-in process and will register your organization as a credit creator.
My business was previously registered with the Renewable Fuels Regulation. Will I need to reapply to the Clean Fuel Regulations?
My business is located in British Columbia. Do I register with the British Columbia Low Carbon Fuels Standard or with the federal Clean Fuels Regulations?
On-road EV charging station owners in British Columbia can register with both programs to earn more credits. Off-road charging station hosts for vehicles like electric lift trucks are excluded from BC's provincial program.
How long does the application process typically take?
How can my company enroll in Smart Rebates™?
- Companies interested in Smart Rebates™ must first opt-in by completing our streamlined opt-in package and our Participation Agreement. This will allow Smart Charging Technologies (SCT) to survey your sites, assess your electric vehicle charging stations, and confirm eligibility.
EV charging station owners receive CFR credits for every metric ton of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions avoided. These are sold on the market to fuel producers that need to offset their own emissions. The CFR credit market is based on supply and demand, so the values of credits may vary.
Credit aggregators like Smart Charging Technologies (SCT) manage the trading process and sell credits in bulk. As one of the largest credit aggregators in North America, we ensure that owners of electric vehicle charging stations earn the highest price for their CFR credits.
What kind of rebates can I expect to earn?
The energy credit market is based on supply and demand and may vary with the type and quantity of EV charging equipment. When you enroll with us, you’ll receive a no-cost on-site audit to get you an estimate of your potential earnings. Contact us to initiate the audit process.
How long can I expect to receive rebates?
Rebates are earned on an annual basis based on the amount of electricity delivered from your EV charging stations, as well as on the supply-and-demand market of CFR credit trading.
You’ll receive annual cheques that reflect the value of your sold CFR credits, which you can apply to any business expenses.
What’s the catch?
When can I expect my first rebate cheque?
EV charging station owners that opt into the Regulations are subject to annual reporting and record-keeping requirements. With Smart Rebates™, SCT manages all your reporting requirements. With our proprietary reporting tools, we provide all our clients with an audit protection guarantee to help you ensure compliance.
We submit all required reports through the Clean Fuel Regulations Credit and Tracking System (CATS) by the following deadlines:
- April 30th – Annual credit creation report that details the creation of CFR credits during that compliance period.
- June 30th – Credit creation report for the compliance period that ends on December 31.
- April 30th of the following year – Single report that combines the required credit-creation reports for the compliance period that ends on June 30 and the compliance period that ends on December 31.
Meeting these deadlines without the help of a credit manager can be time-intensive and subject to fines in the event of a misreport. By enrolling with Smart Rebates™, you don’t have to worry about missing important reporting deadlines – we’ll take care of that for you at no out-of-pocket cost.
What type of data is being collected and reported to the Clean Fuel Regulations Credit and Tracking System?
What happens if my site changes or if I purchase new charging stations?
- We’ll perform a no-cost in-person audit to document all changes and ensure that all relevant changes are reported correctly.
What happens if I report inaccurate data?
Inaccurate reporting may result in fines from the Minister. Our services help you avoid the risks associated with self-reporting.
